Blind Lions formed at Hovering Horse studio over several months as we three musicians, each from a different generation but all deeply influenced by jazz and experimental musics, immersed ourselves in extended live improvisations. Our work was to convey our musical psyches to the edges of expression, well beyond genre boundaries.
Our name refers to our interest in spirituality and is drawn from a quote by Leon Bloy: "When those who love God try to talk about Him, their words are blind lions looking for a spring in the desert." The music also reflects our interests in landscape, tribal musics, blues, noise, post-jazz, post-rock, film music, and collage. All pieces are original group compositions, spontaneously composed.
Hovering Horse Sessions 3 is the third of a three-album compilation of live performances occurring between January and April of 2017.
John R. Campbell is a guitarist, keyboardist, and poet. His eclectic music explores landscape dynamics via acoustic and electric textures. He has worked with Trio Bravo, Woodman/Kellam/Campbell, Avant Garage, and other configurations.
David Floratos is a saxophonist, flutist, and composer. He embraces jazz, funk, blues, and classical music as well as film/game music. He's played with the American Metropole Orchestra, The Western Hemisphere Orchestra, Black & Blue, DTW, and his jazz trio, The Leftside.
Kevin Van Walk is a drummer, musical catalyst, and impresario steeped in ambient music, post-jazz, free jazz, noise, and rock. His projects include The Van Meyers, Toadstool, Module 7, and many other sonic excursions.
